I recently spoke with a friend who made an interesting point. He said that councillors should see themselves not just as elected representatives, but as stewards of their wards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first glance, that might sound obvious. Isn’t that already their job? But the more I thought about it, the more I realized there is an important distinction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A councillor’s formal role is largely focused on policy: advocating for initiatives, debating issues, voting on decisions, and working with fellow councillors to move ideas forward. That is certainly an important part of the job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But stewardship goes beyond that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A steward is someone who genuinely cares for their community, even when there is no requirement to act. They do things not because they are written into the job description, but because they want to make their neighbourhood better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reality is that not every good idea will gain support at City Hall. Sometimes a councillor may advocate for a policy and fail to secure enough votes. But that does not mean they are powerless. They can still lead by example, build partnerships, and help drive positive change outside the council chamber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take community cleanliness as an example. A councillor can certainly advocate for better city services, but they can also volunteer with local organizations, organize cleanups, encourage residents to get involved, and help create a culture of civic pride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, I recently volunteered with A Greener Future, an organization that does excellent work keeping our communities clean. The event was well organized, and it reminded me that meaningful change often happens when people roll up their sleeves and get involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If I am elected as Ward 5 Councillor, this is something I intend to continue doing regularly. Not because the job requires it, but because leadership is about more than attending meetings and passing motions. It is also about inspiring others to contribute and showing that community problems can be solved when people work together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Good policy matters. But sometimes stewardship means simply doing something instead of waiting for a policy to be passed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
